Antique Japanese Carved Dragon Throne Chair

A spectacular Meiji-era throne chair (late 19th c.), masterfully carved from rich ebonized hardwood. The high back and arms are alive with dragons in deep relief, symbols of power, imperial strength, wisdom, and protection, while scrolling foliage and mythical motifs adorn every inch. The arms terminate in fierce dragon heads, symbolizing guardianship. The apron and legs are richly embellished with scrolling foliage and mythical forms, showcasing the incredible craftsmanship of late 19th century Japanese furniture.

The chair is crafted from ebonized hardwood, Japanese keyaki (elm), both prized for their durability and ability to take fine carving. Its dark, polished surface enhances the depth of the carving, giving the piece both gravitas and decorative brilliance.

This style belongs to the Meiji period (1868–1912) export tradition, when Japanese master carvers produced elaborate furniture for Western markets. Often referred to as “Dragon Chairs” or “Throne Chairs,” pieces like this were commissioned for grand interiors, often as conversation pieces. This monumental piece showcases Japanese artistry, blending elegance with authority. A true conversation piece and statement of status, perfect for collectors, designers, or anyone looking to anchor a grand interior.
