Pair of Antique Italian Gilt Gesso Rococo-Style Wall Shelves

Description

A charming pair of antique gilt wall shelves crafted in gilt gesso with richly modeled Rococo-style scrollwork and acanthus decoration. Each shelf features a shaped upper platform supported by pierced scrolling ornamentation, finished in a warm aged gilt surface that gives the pair wonderful depth and character.

Their sculptural form makes them decorative even when displayed without an object. Wall brackets and small display shelves of this type became popular throughout Europe as a way of presenting porcelain, sculpture and treasured decorative objects, with Rococo-inspired examples particularly recognizable for their scrolling foliage, asymmetry and richly ornamental surfaces.

These would be ideal for displaying a pair of porcelain figures, small bronzes, urns or other decorative objects and would look particularly effective mounted on either side of a mirror or artwork.
