Pair of Antique French Rococo-Style Gilt Metal Sconces

Description

A handsome pair of antique French-style wall sconces featuring dramatic scrolling foliage and sculptural acanthus decoration in a warm gilt finish. The sweeping asymmetric forms are strongly influenced by the French Rococo tradition, characterized by fluid curves, naturalistic foliage and exuberant ornamentation, with each sconce branching outward in a graceful arrangement designed to hold multiple candles or lights.

Rococo design developed in France during the early 18th century and became renowned for its lighter, more fluid alternative to the formality of the preceding Baroque period, and its characteristic scrollwork and acanthus motifs have remained influential in French decorative arts for centuries. These sconces would make an exceptional statement flanking a mirror, painting, fireplace, doorway or console.
