Pair of Chinese Polychrome Dragon Vases

Description

A striking pair of Chinese decorative vases featuring richly colored relief decoration and dramatic dragon imagery.

Each vase has a flared mouth, slender neck and rounded body rising from a spreading foot. Coiling dragons move through stylized clouds against a textured red ground, surrounded by intricate scrolling ornament in turquoise, dark green, blue and coral. Gold toned bands define the silhouette and bring warmth to the richly patterned surfaces.

The dragon is an enduring motif in Chinese decorative arts, traditionally associated with power, protection and auspicious fortune. Here, the raised decoration gives the pair a sculptural quality, with details that reward close inspection.

Their matching proportions make them particularly effective on a mantel, console, cabinet or either side of a larger decorative object.
