Description

A distinctive Dutch armchair, believed to date to the early to mid-eighteenth century, richly decorated with floral marquetry and possessing considerable historical character.

The tall, shaped back frames a vase-shaped central splat inlaid with an elaborate arrangement of flowers, foliage and a decorative urn. Further inlaid ornament extends across the scrolling arms, shaped seat rail and cabriole front legs, with a charming bird motif accenting the front apron. Golden-toned upholstery complements the warm wood and contrasting marquetry.

The silhouette reflects the Queen Anne influence on Dutch furniture, combining graceful curves with a strong architectural presence. Floral marquetry exemplifies the cabinetmaker’s decorative skill, using carefully fitted pieces of contrasting wood to create intricate pictorial designs.

This amazing chair represents approximately three centuries of furniture history. Its importance lies in the combination of sculptural form, detailed ornament and surviving evidence of traditional craftsmanship, qualities that make antique furniture compelling to collect and live with.

A remarkable accent for a library, entrance or bedroom, offering the presence of a historical object as well as the beauty of a decorative chair.

Condition: Age-related wear, areas of inlay loss and surface irregularities are visible, together with wear to the upholstery.
