Pair of Antique Chinese Cobalt Blue Palace Style Urns

Description

An imposing pair of hand painted Chinese palace urns in fine porcelain, distinguished by cobalt blue grounds, narrative panels and raised gilded ornament. Garden scenes populated with figures alternate with birds and flowering plants, framed by densely worked floral scrolls. Sculptural guardian lion handles and applied dragons reinforce their architectural presence.

The decoration draws on the auspicious language of traditional Chinese porcelain: guardian lions signify protection, while scenes of children express wishes for prosperity and family continuity. Their scale and flared profiles place them within the tradition commonly described as palace style vases. The blue grounds provide a strong contrast to the multicolored enamels and gilding.

Displayed together from our Rancho Santa Fe porcelain and fine china gallery, these substantial vessels would make a commanding statement beside an entrance, fireplace or large console.
