Antique Sèvres-Style Hand-Painted Fan-Shaped Porcelain Curiosity Chest

Description

A highly decorative antique Sevres style porcelain box and fan-shaped curiosity chest, hand painted with romantic pastoral scenes, floral garlands and elaborate gilt ornamentation. The unusual fan-form lid is the most distinctive feature of this piece, centered with a finely painted courting scene of a musician and lady in a landscape, surrounded by additional scenic panels, delicate roses, scrolling gilt borders and an intricately decorated fan motif along the lower edge.

The exterior continues the decorative scheme with hand-painted floral garlands and gilt accents against a soft pale blue ground. The hinged lid opens to reveal a white porcelain interior with a central floral bouquet, giving the piece an equally attractive presentation when displayed open.

The underside bears a painted mark in the Sèvres tradition; because marks of this style were widely used by later European porcelain decorators, we describe the piece conservatively as Sèvres-style unless further documentation confirms the factory of origin. Its unusual form, strong decorative quality and detailed hand painting make this an exceptional cabinet piece for a collector of European porcelain or decorative objects.
