Spectacular Antique Extra Large Italian Oil Painting on Board, Sleeping Venus

Description

An impressive Italian painting on board depicting Sleeping Venus reclining in a tranquil pastoral landscape, presented in a substantial ornamental gold toned frame. The sleeping figure rests upon ivory drapery and a rich red cushion, her elongated pose extending across the foreground. Beyond her, rolling green hills, scattered trees and distant buildings create a softly atmospheric setting beneath a pale blue and warm cream sky.

The composition follows the classical reclining Venus tradition associated with Italian Renaissance art, pairing the idealized female figure with a peaceful landscape. The warm flesh tones, flowing fabric and expansive countryside give the work a serene, balanced presence.

The substantial original frame is embellished with scrolling ornament, floral details and repeating decorative bands, creating an architectural surround that complements the scale of the painting. At 78 inches wide, this is a commanding statement piece for a formal living room, grand entrance, library or spacious principal bedroom.
