Stunning extra-large Antique Italian Oil on board depicting The Sleeping Venus in original giltwood antique frame
This stunning Antique Italian Oil on Board with a very heavy regency wooden frame depicts The Sleeping Venus. The original Sleeping Venus (also known as the Dresden Venus) is a painting attributed to the Italian Renaissance painter Giorgione, although it has long been usually thought that Titian completed it after Giorgione’s death in 1510. The landscape and sky are generally accepted to be mainly by him. In the 21st century, much scholarly opinion has shifted further, to see the nude figure of Venus as also painted by Titian, leaving Giorgione’s contribution uncertain. It is currently housed in Germany in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden Museum. This painting, just like the original portrays a reclining nude woman whose curves echo the rolling contours of the hills in the background. It was very popular in the Italian Renaissance times to paint female nudes in a landscape, accompanied by clothed males. At the time however, the original piece was considered very daring due to the scale of the Piece. What is also an interesting fact about the piece, in the late 19th Century a little cupid figure that had previously sat at the base of Venus’s feet was painted over. The Landscape has also been altered over its life, as well as the color of the drapery, and even Venuses profile. Perhaps these changes were commissioned by its different wealthy owners.
This piece measures an impressive 52 tall x 78 wide.
