Chairs of this grand scale were designed to make an impression in the entrance halls and reception areas of substantial Victorian homes, where their dramatic architectural form reflected the Gothic Revival taste of the period. They were as much a display of craftsmanship and status as they were functional furniture.

Recently reupholstered in a gorgeous rich green velvet, which looks fabulous against the deep, warm tones of the carved wood and gives this wonderful antique chair a fresh, sophisticated look.
