Description

Antique beautifully executed Royal Vienna hand-painted porcelain cabinet plate, richly decorated in the classical style for which these pieces are so admired. The central scene depicts a romantic mythological subject inspired by Classical antiquity, featuring a seated warrior and a graceful female figure, delicately rendered with soft, painterly tones and fine detail.

The plate is framed by an elegant series of borders, including vibrant red and celadon panels adorned with hand-painted floral garlands and intricate gilt decoration. The use of raised and tooled gilding, along with the finely segmented design, reflects the high level of craftsmanship associated with Royal Vienna porcelain.

Royal Vienna porcelain originates from the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory (founded in 1718), one of the earliest and most prestigious porcelain factories in Europe. Although the original factory closed in the 19th century, the term “Royal Vienna” became widely used for finely decorated porcelain produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in Austria and Bohemia, often featuring hand-painted scenes inspired by mythology, romance, and classical art. These plates were created primarily as decorative cabinet pieces, intended for display rather than everyday use, and were prized for their artistry and refinement. Today, they remain highly collectible for their beauty, craftsmanship, and timeless appeal.

This piece is marked on the back with the Royal Vienna underglaze blue “beehive” mark, (fun fact, it is actually a Shield, but is often referred to as a Beehive. )

A striking and decorative example, perfect for display, bringing color, elegance, and a touch of classical European artistry into any interior
