Antique Italian Oil on Canvas | Late 18th–Early 19th Century

A beautiful and deeply evocative antique oil on canvas depicting Christ wearing the Crown of Thorns, following His scourging and before the Crucifixion. The subject is known as Ecce Homo – Latin for “Behold the Man” – referring to Pontius Pilate’s presentation of Christ to the crowd. It became one of the most important devotional subjects in European religious art.

The composition is after Guido Reni (1575–1642), the celebrated Italian Baroque master of the Bolognese school. Reni was particularly admired for the grace and spiritual beauty of his religious paintings. Here, Christ is portrayed with a contemplative upward gaze, softly modeled features and restrained emotion, beautifully capturing the serenity and pathos associated with Reni’s celebrated compositions.

Based upon its materials, construction and overall appearance, the work is believed to date to the late 18th or early 19th century. Paintings of this type were traditionally created for private devotion and remain admired for their classical beauty and connection to the European Old Master tradition.

Presented in a wonderful ornately carved gilt frame, the intimate oval portrait has tremendous presence despite its smaller scale.
