Antique Japanese Carved Dragon Throne-Form Chair

Description

A monumental antique Japanese throne-form chair with extraordinary sculptural presence and densely carved dragon decoration.

The broad back features a powerful dragon moving through swirling clouds, framed by layered borders and an architectural crest. A carved bird with outstretched wings occupies the upper section, beneath a pierced arrangement of further dragons and scrolling ornament.

Dragon-head arm terminals project forward on either side, while elaborate carving continues across the apron and substantial curved legs. The deep, dark finish emphasizes the relief and gives the chair a commanding silhouette.

Its decoration draws on the rich vocabulary of East Asian dragon and auspicious bird imagery. The term “throne-form” describes its imposing appearance rather than suggesting documented royal ownership.

At more than five feet tall and over four feet wide, this is a statement piece for a grand entrance, library, gallery or dramatic collected interior.

Condition: Visible surface wear and lighter exposed areas appear along the seat edges, feet and projecting details.
