Description
Salvador Dalí limited edition Lithograph entitled The Hallucinogenic Toreador
This limited-edition lithograph is based on Salvador Dalí’s celebrated surrealist masterpiece The Hallucinogenic Toreador (1969–1970), created using his paranoiac-critical method, a technique that transforms subconscious visions into complex visual illusions.
The central, seemingly hidden face of the toreador is formed by repeated images of the Venus de Milo, blending classical beauty with modern surrealism and inspired by a hallucinatory vision Dalí experienced in an art store. Flies, which appear to form the toreador’s costume, symbolize both death and decay surrounding the dying bull, as well as Catalan identity and resistance, an expression of Dalí’s national pride. In the upper left, the serious face of Gala, Dalí’s wife, reflects her strong dislike of bullfighting. Additional details include a self-portrait of Dalí as a child in a sailor suit at the lower right and a dying bull at the lower left, anchoring the work’s emotional and symbolic depth.
