Description
A handsome pair of antique English Charles II style carved oak armchairs, circa 1880, combining impressive proportions, sculptural woodwork and richly patterned original needlepoint upholstery.
Tall upholstered backs and generous seats feature an intricate arrangement of flowers, foliage, birds and animals in muted green, rust, burgundy and warm beige. The layered palette complements the deep tones and grain of the oak frames.
Sweeping arms terminate in expressive carved scrolls, supported by turned uprights. Boldly carved front stretchers give the chairs a strong architectural presence, while decorative nailhead edging defines the upholstered seats.
Made in the Charles II revival tradition, the pair recalls the grandeur of seventeenth century English seating. Their substantial frames, turned supports and elaborate carving reflect the nineteenth century appreciation for historical furniture styles.
Dating to approximately 1880, these chairs bring around 145 years of history to an interior. Their appeal lies in the combination of decorative craftsmanship, warm aged wood and the opportunity to display a coordinating antique pair.
Particularly effective beside a fireplace, flanking a console or arranged within a library, entrance hall or traditional living room.
