Description
Extremely Impressive Antique Spanish ornately carved walnut Choir Stall with Misericords , Circa Mid 1700’s
This imposing ecclesiastical bench is an authentic Spanish choir stall (stallum) from a church or monastic setting, distinguished by its lifting seats with carved misericords. Designed for clergy during long liturgical services, the hinged seats reveal projecting supports beneath, offering discreet relief while standing (an ingenious feature rooted in the Latin misericordia, meaning “mercy.”)
The stall retains its original raised base, consistent with traditional choir installation, where seating was elevated to denote clerical hierarchy, improve acoustics, and define the sacred choir space within the church. Richly hand-carved with bold Baroque scrollwork, shell crests, and architectural paneling, the piece reflects the dramatic sculptural tradition of Spanish religious furniture. The deeply modeled arms and individually divided seats emphasize rank and order, while the monumental scale and craftsmanship underscore its original architectural function.
Executed entirely by hand in dense walnut hardwood, choir stalls of this quality and completeness (particularly with intact lifting seats and original base) are increasingly rare. Today, such pieces are prized as architectural statements, valued for their historical integrity, sculptural presence, and evocative connection to Old World sacred interiors. Minor wear consistent with age and ecclesiastical use.
